Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a small lake, about 30 km north from Toronto.

Time

It was taken late afternoon. Geese were flying often, and I took this photo one or two seconds after their take off from the water.

Lighting

It was a nice day, with good lighting. Close to evening.

Equipment

I used my camera, Nikon d3100, without tripod.

Inspiration

I like to go to that place because there are many birds there, and only few people. I usually spend a whole day there, waiting for a good shot. It is especially spectacular during the late summer and autumn, when geese fly in large flocks.

Editing

I touched brightness and contrast, and cropped the image to emphasize reflections in the water.

In my camera bag

I usually keep a minimum equipment with me, a camera and one or two lenses. I like to walk a lot, and do not want to have heavy or big equipment in my bag.

Feedback

If you want to capture birds, it is important to find a proper place and be ready to act quickly. It takes only few seconds for the whole flock of geese to take off. The birds usually make a special noise before departure, so photographer have few seconds to orient a camera in a proper direction. During each flight I try to make as many shots as possible, and look on them later, at home It may take few hours to observe several flights and to make a good photo!
