Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my Boerne, Texas studio. I am a self-taught photographer whose specialty is portraits.

Time

This image was shot at 3:35pm in November.

Lighting

I shot this using window light from a large SW facing window and used white poly boards to bounce the light.

Equipment

This image was shot with the Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 50mm 1.4 lens. and Heavenly light from my studio window.

Inspiration

This was a commercial shoot to showcase the handcrafted jewelry the model was wearing. My models were so lovely I had to do more than the obligatory shots and this is one of those shots.

Editing

My images are in raw, so I do basic corrections in Adobe Camera Raw then export as a psd, I then retouch using frequency separation, some dodge and burn, then layer adjustments (curves, selective color, contrast, vignette) in Photoshop. I finished off with a gradient haze on the lower third of this image.

In my camera bag

I always have my 50mm 1.4 and probably shoot 60 percent of the time with it. I also like to have my Canon 24-70mm 2.8 II for when I am in a tight space, I also keep on hand an 85mm 1.4. , 600EX-RT Speedlite, Canon ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter, extra batteries, etc.

Feedback

A South facing window and large white poly boards or reflectors for bouncing the light. I practically had my model in a box; I used two poly boards painted an olive green color to create a corner, then two poly boards painted white for bounce. I love how it helps to wrap the model in light.
