This photo was taken in Montgomery Alabama at my friends house on 6/14/14 at 2:17 pm. The temperature that day was HOT! So, we opted to stay inside for the well being of the baby (and for ours LOL). Liam was a few days old at this point.Time
It was around mid afternoon on a Saturday. We had planned to do this elaborate photo shoot but time and baby just did not want to cooperate.Lighting
I like to use natural lighting. The natural lighting lets me get personal with my subjects like in this instance, Liam had been not feeling well and the poor thing had ruptured the blood vessels in his eyes. I did not want to make the time I had with him upsetting.Equipment
I used the Cannon EOS Digital Rebel XS. ISO was 800. No need for a tripod. I did use a black sheet ( I am just starting out on this journey so no fancy backdrops yet!) draped over a China cabinet so that I had a background to use. No flash was used as I had enough natural lighting from the bay windows that we adjacent to us.Inspiration
What inspired me to take this photo? The girl in the photo is my friend (leaving name out for now) she had told me previously that she had had the misfortune of losing a baby girl. She was so excited to be pregnant with another baby that I asked her if she would let me take his newborn pictures. She agreed and we would talk about what she would want. She ended up having a difficult pregnancy with him. There were a couple scares her and there but he came into this world happy and healthy. He did get very sick his first few days of life. On the day the photo shoot arrived she had said that he was feeling better but not 100%. I told her it was ok and we would work around him. We never did those "sleeping baby" pics but what we did get we amazing. This particular photo was at my request. She had not prepared herself (ie dolled up) but I assured her it would be fine. She agreed and the picture you see is the end result. This picture relays a mother's undying love for her child. Her miracle, her life, her world.Editing
Yes I did. It was originally a color photo but I brought out the highlights and turned it into a B&W photo. In some instances, like this one, I felt that color could not convey the message that I was seeing. Nothing to fancy just a simple tweek here and voila! In my camera bag
Normally I just carry my camera bag. Which has my Cannon Rebel and short and long lenses. I do have a tripod and a suitcase in which I have different props that if needed I do carry with me. I am at this point a hobbyist in photography so I am still gathering different lenses and etc.Feedback
I would have to say be patient. The best photos are never rushed. I had to be patient with both baby and mother for that shot to work. You will almost never have what you planned come out perfect. I have to tell my self this every day because I get too caught up in making sure I have that one perfect shot where I could have 6 other shots that could be perfect as well.
