Location
The photo was taken at my cousins cottage, during our annual family reunion. It's on beautiful Moira Lake, just adjacent to Camp Quin-Mo-Lac.Time
The picture was taken at sunset.Lighting
You can't create this light in Photoshop, it was all Mother Nature...perfect lighting.Equipment
I would have normally used a tripod for this shot but I didn't have it with me. The light was getting pretty low when I finally got this shot. I used my Canon 7D Mark I and the Canon 24-79 F4L with IS. I'm not sure I would have been able to get the shot free handed, with out the image stabilization.Inspiration
After attending the family reunion for some 20 years...it was the year (2015) that I introduced my daughter to the rest of my family (Aunts, Uncles and cousins) She was 11 months old at the time. It was the first year I brought my camera equipment to the reunion, thought being I would get some great pics of my daughter. I did...as well as some great shots of the sunset.Editing
The only processing I did was some basic lens and colour correction (in Lightroom) and a slight crop and horizontal adjustment. I had intended to process this as HDR using exposure bracketing, but there was too much motion in the water...and I was getting some patterning in the final shot (3 exposure bracket) In hind-site, I think the underexposure on the tress in the foreground (as a result in metering on the sunset) gave the shot a nice moody look.In my camera bag
I always have the 24-70 f4L in the bag. I usually have a canon 7-200 F2.8L IS II. I never have my tripod, at least not when I really need it ;)Feedback
Use the fastest lens you have, experiment with depth of field, be mindful of your ISO (don't over do it or you will have noise to contend with) and try and think of the final product. I sometimes do a different crop or composition for something I'm going to put in a frame and hand on the wall. Take the best shot you can (white balance, colour, sharpness). Not everything can be fixed in post.
