Location
I took this photo in Arches National Park near a town called Moab in Utah. This formation is called the Mesa's Arch. An amazing sight.Time
I took this photograph at sunrise.Lighting
The lighting was tricky as you're shooting straight against the sun. I got the arch to cover most of the sun but i got a little bit of in the frame in order to give the warm feeling to the image and show the sun rays.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 5D Mark III with a 16-35mm f4 on a Manfrotto tripod. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
Images I have seen previously inspired me to get out there and take this photo. It's hard to come up with a shot of a place that has been photographed so many times before so I wanted to come up with something little different than the rest of the images of Mesa's Arch and I hope that I achieved my mission.Editing
To create a final image like this, post processing was essential. My photograph is a composite of 5 images shot consecutively with 5 changes in exposure. I merged them using Nik's HDR Efex Pro.In my camera bag
Let's just say that even though I pretty much continuously traveling, I definitely don't make it easy on myself. I always carry my Canon 5D Mark III along with Canon 16-35mm F4, Canon 70-200mm F2.8 II and my Manfrotto tripod which is already hard on anybody's back when hiking up mountains or walking long trails. On top of this I carry my Canon 24-70mm F2.8 when planning to shoot portraits.Feedback
Mesa's Arch is quiet a popular place for photographers. You're going to need to get there at least 2 hours before the sunrise in order to get a a good spot as there is room for only 10 to 12 photographers. There is a window of 10 minutes until the sun gets above the arch so you want to be ready to go with your settings an all before it's too late. If you want to be able to get the blue sky and the details of the rocks, post processing is a must so use bracketing or take at least 3 to 5 images with different exposures so you can get better results while you are merging them during post processing.
