Location
My photograph was taken in Lower Antelope Canyon, Arizona back in April 2014 during a month long road trip of the South West.Time
The time of the day was critical to get this shot as only a small window of time allows for sufficient light inside the canyon. I decided to go there shortly before noon to ensure that i could be inside when the sun would be at its highest point.Lighting
My vision before i captured this image was to show viewers what the eye really sees when inside the Antelope Canyon. The vivid blue sky seems even bluer than ever before against the deep strong orange and purples of the canyon walls. It truly is one of the most otherworldly locations I have ever photographed. I needed to make sure the light, shadows and the colors could be seen in my final image.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 5D Mark III with a 16-35mm f4 on a Manfrotto tripod. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
I've seen so many images from Antelope Canyon which over time had inspired me to go there and photograph myself. Antelope Canyon is the most photographed canyon in the world, so i wanted to go out there and capture something just a little different from what i had seen before.Editing
To create a final image like this, post processing was essential. My photograph is a composite of 5 images shot consecutively with 5 changes in exposure. I merged them using Nik's HDR Efex Pro.In my camera bag
Let's just say that even though I pretty much continuously traveling, I definitely don't make it easy on myself. I always carry my Canon 5D Mark III along with Canon 16-35mm F4, Canon 70-200mm F2.8 II and my Manfrotto tripod which is already hard on anybody's back when hiking up mountains or walking long trails. On top of this I carry my Canon 24-70mm F2.8 when planning to shoot portraits.Feedback
Patience is crucial when it comes to getting the perfect shot in your mind. I had a pretty tight schedule for my whole trip of the South West, but still set aside 4 days for this location once I found that the weather was not going to playing in my favor when I arrived. Luckily my perseverance paid off. After 2 days waiting around in a gray overcast Page, Arizona the sun came out to play, the skies were blue, and I was finally able to go out and capture the image I had been dreaming of.
