Location
A friend of mine was renovating his house on Eastern Long Island and wanted some photos of this fireplace before work began. My daughter (my favorite model) and I went there and just had some fun shooting all kinds of different things.Time
This photo was taken in late afternoon.Lighting
As mentioned above, this photo was taken in late afternoon. I did not use a flash but there was beautiful, natural light coming from large windows on the right.Equipment
I used the only camera I had at the time. It was a borrowed Sony Cybershot - DSC-F828 which is basically a point and shoot.Inspiration
Somehow everything just fell together perfectly. The setting of the fireplace, the light, the minimalism in the room and my daughter. As I was shooting I could just feel that these shots were going to look amazing in black and white. I prefer to call myself a photographic artist rather than a photographer. For me, it's not so much about the equipment used, how much money you spend, the technical details, etc. It's more about a feeling, a sense, maybe even what people call having an "eye". It also helps to have a beautiful model who you work well with and who shares your artistic vision.Editing
The only post processing done was a conversion to black and white. In my camera bag
I started out with a point and shoot borrowed from a friend. Like I mentioned previously I'm not a photographer who really leans too heavily on equipment. Since my point and shoot days I've moved up to a Canon Rebel T3i with the kit lens. I've also recently purchased a Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Lens.Feedback
I can't really give advice on how to capture something similar. My general advice for photographers just starting out is to shoot what you love and what moves you! I don't believe that having an eye for photography is something that can be learned. Sure, you can learn all of the technical stuff but really, for me, the basis of great photography lies in an inherent talent that cannot be learned in a photography course.
