Behind The Lens

Location

This Photo was taken in Nevada , just outside the ghost town of Rhyolite ... I had a shot in mind for a friend who is a song writer and was writing a song about the journey of her life so we took a road trip to some where remote to create this .. This was my first real effort to try and tell a story with the lens

Time

It was taken in the afternoon as the desert sun was slowly sinking , but because of the fact others use this road we had to take our chances to get the shot when we could , i would have liked to have left it a bit later and had the light softer , but others use this little road ..

Lighting

nothing really to mention about the lighting , more about the focal length , i wanted the shot somewhat compressed and with a very thin plane of focus so used the longest lens i had on my cropped Canon and i cut the harsh light with my CPL ..

Equipment

This was taken on my Canon 7D , Tamron 70-200 wide open to make sure only one small plain was in focus to try to create the effect of what was in front and what had been left behind was not as sharp as the now , a Mono-pod and polarize filter ..

Inspiration

The inspiration for the photo was a friends song about modern life and how we accumulate and discard stuff both physically and emotionally ,esp hi-lighting how disposable everything has become . As we let this stuff go we sometimes do it bit by bit , sometimes neatly , other times scattered with no patterns , sometimes we do it piece by piece and it can look messy . All the while we are do this much of our focus is on reaching for the new and shiny .. But i wanted the shot to be from the outside looking in as an observer as I wanted to try and convey how we often don't even realize we are leaving these trails behind us , trails which ironically are full of stuff that just was in the past just as new and shiny as that which we now are focused on for the future ..

Editing

I shoot in Raw as most do , Process in LR to get back colors , shadows and textures as i remember them , i take a few notes of the day in a notebook and how it felt , what the light was like ,how the colors felt and the feel of the location ect , but apart from small dust spot removal and a little clean up in content aware i rarely do any photo editing in Photoshop .. Often i will have music playing and that may also come into play when i am processing as it is usually something old , from the 60's or 70's and that also helps me to get back to a time and place and that can affect the way i edit ... This day we were listening to the Allman Brothers ..

In my camera bag

I didn't have a lot of gear , My Canon , a nifty 50 mm , and my Tamron 70-200 , one filter and a monopod when i took this last year , if i needed something wider i would rent it , my gallery is stacked with photos taken with me having to make the most of what i had and having to be creative and to make the most of those days i rented a specific lens , to be honest it taught me how to think outside the box and how to think about photography differently than many i talk to that have the cash to buy what they want when they want .. These days i have swapped to a Nikon D810.

Feedback

Not really sure what to say , try things esp in the day of digital photography you have nothing to lose by experimenting , think about the shot you want and what it will take to get that photo , listen to what others are saying as somethings we get a bit to tunnel visioned , know your gear ... and mostly have fun ...
