Location
This was taken in Belmont, NH close to Lake Winnisquam. The train tracks are not used (safety first) so I knew that it wouldn't be a problem to take my time.Time
I took the photo around 8:00 AM on Columbus day weekend 2015.Lighting
Because there were so many tall trees, getting there at sunset wouldn't have been beneficial. When I arrived the sun was high enough to light both sides of the tracks and showoff the great foliage last year.Equipment
The photo was taken with a Nikon d5100 and a Nikon 70-300 zoom. I was pretty far away from the subject and knew that was the only way I could correctly frame it. Typically I use at 18-55 for most of my landscape shots.Inspiration
I don't shoot many train track images but I would have regretted not taking this one based on how colorful the scene was. And I didn't get there intending to take the photo, I was going to take photos of something else. So you could say I stumbled on this by accident.Editing
I cropped the photo to remove some of the bland sky. Also removed a few stray beer cans and lightened the dirt between the tracks to make it more pleasing to the eye. The colors on the trees were enhanced slightly (because all digital photos need post processing) but not much. The foliage was fantastic last year, something we haven't had in a while! In my camera bag
Nikon d5100, nikon 70-300, nikon 18-55, various filters.Feedback
Always look around for opportunities! I went to that spot to photograph another subject. Only when I got there did I see the train tracks would make for a great capture.
