Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Singapore Zoo last year. The Singapore Zoo is arguably any Singaporean child's fondest childhood (& probably schooling!) memory, as most kindergartens and primary schools would definitely bring them there on a learning journey to learn more about their favourite animals.

Time

If my memory doesn't fail me, this was taken in early afternoon.

Lighting

Despite this being an enclosure in the Singapore Zoo, it was an outdoor, open space for the animals to move around freely and enjoy natural sunlight. This makes the lighting in the photo a lot more natural and soft than if it was taken in an indoor enclosure.

Equipment

Just a Nikon P350 - my very first camera!

Inspiration

Animals, especially primates, can show very human-like features and emotions if you pay enough attention. I saw this little friend focusing very hard while he fidgets with his fingers and thought it looked incredibly human and child-like, so I had to snap this!

Editing

I tried not to do too much post-processing for this photo as I wanted to keep the natural features of the monkey, so I only adjusted brightness and contrast using Photoshop in this photo.

In my camera bag

I normally have my camera - now a OM-D E-M10 Mark II - & at least 2 SD cards, as well as a backup battery. Sometimes, I bring along a film camera (Holga 135BC), as film photography is my other indulgence.

Feedback

As mentioned earlier, pay close attention to animals! Animals, much like humans, can be very expressive and make for great photography subjects. You don't have to go to the zoo to get a similar photo - just start from your own pet, or even animals on the street. You'll be surprised at what kind of photos you can get at unexpected moments, so keep snapping! Just remember not to irritate, harm or scare any animals in the process.
