Location
This photo is actually taken in my very own backyard in Canada's smallest province, Prince Edward Island. PEI is known for its beautiful summers and unique red sands.Time
I like to shoot in the evenings as I'm home from school and I'm not getting that harsh lighting from the midday sun. The eerie lighting and shadows just isn't as easy to capture in the mornings.Lighting
Forests are great for that ethereal or eerie feeling that I produced in my image because they usually block out any direct sources of light without overshadowing.Equipment
I'm a student, so obviously, I'm not going to have expensive equipment like the pros. All I used was a tripod (this was a self portrait), and a Canon Rebel t2i with a 50mm 1.8 lens. I edited with Photoshop Elements 13.Inspiration
I see a lot of beautifully eerie portraits on Instagram as well as Pinterest and other social media and sometimes, I'm so inspired by pictures I jump right up and grab my tripod and I'm out the door! I wanted to capture motion to give my picture a bit of a different feel rather than a still portrait.Editing
I'm not one to use any extravagant editing techniques as I like an image to look as natural and unedited as possible. All I did was use Photoshop Elements 13 RAW editor to really "up" the contrast. In my camera bag
I have plenty of SD cards on me at all times, as well as my 2 primary lenses: 50mm 1.8 and my 85mm 1.8. (Remember, student budget!) I also have a lens cleaner called Cat Crap (nice, I know) as well as the attachment pieces for the bottom of my camera to attach to my tripod. Nothing fancy, but it does the trick.Feedback
Make sure you have a high enough shutter speed to capture the motion without blur. I used around 1/400. Use a lower aperture to create more focus on the subject rather than the background. Don't be afraid to try different settings! You want your image to be as unique as possible, not a carbon copy of another artist's.
