Location

Facing North from Venice Beach Ca. and Santa Monica Beach in the background

Time

Morning around 10:00 AM

Lighting

The lighting in two of these images in this compilation where shinning from the west to the east, whereas the cloud came from behind. Even though the cloud in this image is dynamic, it was changed on my website to appear more natural. It is important to have the lighting and or shadows to match, even it the concept is surrealistic the image should per as natural looking as possible. Favorite examples of high lights and shadows are the works of surreal painters: Yves Tanguy and Salvador Dali. Re: http://rvmann.com/artwork/3847135-Earth-To-Infinity.html.

Equipment

1. Three cameras digital cameras’: 1. Canon T3i, Lens; Tamron 18-270 mm zoom F 3.5-6.3, 2. Canon Power shot 130 Is - pocket point and shoot (infrared converted), 3. Canon Power shot 150 Is - pocket point and shoot.

Inspiration

This compilation for me had a dual- interpretation. The criticism of the audience, the heavy cloud seen here to them has a religious feeling. As for myself the image on my website at: http://rvmann.com/artwork/3847135-Earth-To-Infinity.html, has a universal or walk into the future concept. On my website that compilation is titled "Earth to Infinity" and it refers to the endlessness of outer space.

Editing

The clouds are a favorite in my collection of over 300 cloud images to choose from. The background was an image I use to fill in the areas that does not match the foreground in contrast, and the people standing in a circle was actually recorded at a memorial to a renown photographer from Venice, Mr. Harry Drinkwater. The cut and pasted stairway was captured at L.A.C.M.A.’s (Los Angeles County Museum Of Art) outdoor escalator selected from my "miscellaneous collection of imagery" copied and pasted into the scene (converted to black and white to match the contrast of the ground people.) The silhouetted couple walking hand in hand was another selection from the "miscellaneous collection of imagery folder” The fog at the vanishing stairway was softened with a blurring tool in Photoshop. The cloud was too dramatic by virtue of popular criticism. so it was replaced; seen here at: http://rvmann.com/artwork/3847135-Earth-To-Infinity.html either one is reasonable acceptable with me. I do sometimes rely on the opinions’ of my friends and colleagues’ so, what appears on my website may reflect a change of aesthetics.

In my camera bag

I usually don't carry a bag, but awaits in my car is a Canon strobe, video adjustable profile light, a Tiltal tripod, selfie stick (for my pocket camera) and the infrared camera.

Feedback

Doing your own composition at best should be merely conceived by original ideas. Art is describe by creative rule is to either to be original, conceptual, copied or changed to accommodate the artists' perception of art. My surreal concepts attempt to reveal the feelings of obscured subliminal wisdoms common to us all. As metaphors they interpret dreams and aide in the search for personal truths and mythologies. The basic purposes of art are to: instruct, inspire, and thrill an audience and oneself. Images and compilations interpret the way I feel about the intervention between the photographic process and the witnessing of any given moment or idea.
