Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during summertime in Tallinn, Estonia. We made session on pier near famous LENNUSADAM- the museum is located in the Tallinn aeroplane harbour in a building originally constructed as a hangar for seaplanes in the area of Peter the Great's Naval Fortress.

Time

?s the location is very popular among locals, who love to walk on pier and watch vintage warships and vessels, we made session early morning around 5 o'clock when the area was deserted. 5 am is perfect time because in Estonia there is observed White Night - phenomenon when natural light is still quite high on night, that is, the whole night is only dusk. So it was a perfect twilight light before dawn.

Lighting

TWILIGHT, DAWN & DUSK Light: Dusk/down time is always perfect condition for shooting- light is smooth and low contrast, colours are cool; this produce wonderfully soft lighting that gives a calm, peaceful mood to subjects.

Equipment

It was shot using Canon, not sure what lens was used (probably Sigma 28mm/1.8 EX DG Aspherical) During session we tried different light combination using mixing of natural light and speedlites with softboxes and reflectors. Also we did shots with more drama light using speed lights and reflectors but finally i chose this shot as best-and it was made with ambient light only.

Inspiration

This shot was a part of the project we did for the pilot of reality show about models (sadly as I know it wasn't released ). I was invited to make a session with newcomer models: to work with them and then to judge how they communicate with me as with a photographer, their artistic skills and attitude. Then I had to choose the best boy and girl separately. Theme of shooting has been chosen in advance: "vintage sailors" for guys and "pin up" for girls. The guy on the photo is winner for male model by my choice. He is special- deaf from birth- so we communicated through interpreter- it was no easiest way to communicate, but his attitude and appearance make him fit perfect for model.

Editing

It was a post-processing using Adobe Lightroom, I made more drama/contrast on clouds and mute colours to make a vintage effect.

In my camera bag

As I do different types of photography from interior/still life to reportage/fashion my equipment may vary from certain tasks. In my bag I always have a couple of Canon bodies, a couple of Zeiss lenses,a Speedlite and receiver-transmitter.

Feedback

Technically this shot is not complicated but specifically in this case, many factors coincided:a good light,a dramatic skyscape, eye-catching model. My advise is to be more focused not on up-to-date equipment but learn about nature of light, understanding advantages and disadvantages of certain light conditions and control them. All that will improve your skills of making good photos.
