I took this photo on top of Whitetop Mountain in Virginia. I simply cannot imagine coming home to this ever day in the fall!Time
I had always wanted to go up to Whitetop Mountain during the fall but never had a chance until 2010. I set out with my Nikon D5000 at my side to see what I could capture. I found this spot just after 3pm that day. I couldn't have been more happy with my shot and the lighting considering my lack of knowledge and sheer luck this day.Lighting
I loved the way the shadows were cast along the driveway, running opposite of where a vehicle would travel, scattered along the path and the light from above almost felt as though it was forcing those yellow leaves to absolutely glow. The darker orange, dark tree trunk, and bits of green in the open side of the tree in the distance was just a nice way to break it up well for the eyes to dart around to.Equipment
I used a Nikon D5000 with my small 55mm lens, no flash and hand held.Inspiration
I drove past and couldn't stop fast enough so that I could back up. My eyes couldn't believe how beautiful this driveway was. I was instantly jealous of the property owners, getting to have that view for a few short weeks while the trees were at their best.Editing
I only did a small bit of post processing in Photoshop Elements. I just wanted to set the contrast a tad deeper and that was it.In my camera bag
I normally have my Nikon D5100 now along with a 55mm lens and a 55 to 200mm sidekick. I can never seem to remember to bring my tripod along!Feedback
I wish I had advice for others. Not too long after this photo was taken, I damaged my lenses by too much heat exposure trying to get a shot of a hot air balloon inflating for take off. That was a hard lesson learned. Maybe one day I will get a chance to photograph again!
