Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my hometowns local reservoir;Which is named, Sibly Lake in Natchitoches [nak-ah-tish] Louisiana. It is a widely used lake for fishing, and boating recreation as well.It is located near the Downtown area in the Northwestern Part of the state.

Time

I wanted to capture a great Sunset falling over the lake,so I chose to go to a Spot not too late in the evening, but note to early either. I really didn't know what to expect as far as clouds, colors,or exposure of sky. I set up my tripod on the Levee of the lake, which gave me a clear open view of the lake, and I waited for the sun to begin to go down.

Lighting

After waiting what seemed to be forever, the Sun began to spray different hues of color across the Lake and Sky.There were several clouds in the sky, nice white puffy ones, and the Sun seemed to reflect as well as penetrate each of them.As the sun kept lowering Itself down toward the Horizon, something magical seemed to be at work. Things were happening quickly, the Light changing angles across the lake, and the clouds transforming into different shapes and sizes. Light was everywhere, and in someplaces, nowhere!

Equipment

The tripod I already mentioned using, which was a brand "X" type, but was made of pretty good aluminum, and had a great weight load rate on Its Ballhead Mount My camera was a Nikon D7000,which is still being used. The lense I believe was the "kit" version being the "18-105mm"f3.5-5.6,or something like that.I'm thinking I also mounted a Polarizing filter on the lense too.I live on a tight budget,so I can't afford the "Pricey" equipment some Others might use. That's about it,Tripod,Camera, and Polarizer, not even a remote shutter trigger.Lol

Inspiration

This is pretty easy to answer,I was Commissioned to do a Print of a "Sunset over Sibley"! Needless to say, there where many images taken, and No,this was not the "Chosen One" by my client.I remembered from years gone by;A mental note if you will, that January produced some uniqe cloud/sky arrangments. So,this endeavor was for the Money side of things, but what I got,was So Much More!

Editing

The Proper camera settings along with the Polarizer in place, and by using a Tripod for stability, little post-processing was used. I did a little more Saturation & Contrast [sliders] and that was pretty much that I am an Old-Timer from shooting with a Nikon F2 Photomic back in the early 70's,and I try to "Get It Right" in Camera!Oh,and while I'm on it,I shoot entirely Manual Settings.

In my camera bag

Well I have more than One Bag,but I carry minimal gear, just the Standard Stuff;a Wide Angle 10-20 Sigma,a Mid Tele like the 18-105 Nikon that i used here, rocket blower, polarizer filter, extra SD cards, cleaning cloths-micro,a speedlight Flash, extra batterys for camera and Flash. If I know that I'm going to shoot Sports,or a Portrait session,I'll also include my Sigma f2.8 70-200,and or a Nikon 55-300.

Feedback

Pick your Spot wisely,do some pre-scouting,or at least know what the Environment looks like at the time the "Shoot" will take place.Get there early enough to Set-Up,your tripod, your camera, and anything else you intend to use.Be aware of how the Shapes and Density of the Light Shines Through,Over,or Around the Subject Matter.Keep on Trying to capture That Moment.Go back if you need to,shoot multiple images, and never be Discouraged... It just takes One Image to "Get Your Shine On"!
