This photo is one of my more successful attempts at an autumn Sunset.... Taken in October, at Waverley Abbey, near Farnham, Surrey.Time
This is a golden hour shot, in October. I actually went to photograph the Abbey, but the sunset and the clouds over the lake were unexpected, and just right!Lighting
It's always about the light.... And there was an abundance of contrast in this image. Always worth taking multiple exposures, if you have the luxury of time, because sometimes, different exposures process better in different post processing software!Equipment
A hand held shot, with my old bullet proof Canon 5Dmk3, and, I believe, my trusty Tamron 24-70mm F2.8.... Favoured by me as it was one of the only F2.8 lenses that possessed image stabilisation.Inspiration
This trip was to capture the sun behind the Abbey, however, as I arrived, the reflection of the sky in the Lake couldn't be overlooked, and quickly became my newly intended mission!!Editing
This was a Raw shot processed in Lightroom... I seem to recall enhancing the sunset colours, and locally brightening the darker areas. As always, I would have boosted shadows and cut the highlights, as well as lens corrections! Much of my inspiration at this time, came from prominent French photographer, Serge Ramelli. In my camera bag
I used to take the kitchen sink, 'just in case', but now I have just two setups, my Canon 5Dmk4 with (still) my 24-70mm Tamron VC lens, and my amazing Sigma Art 20mm F1.4 lens, and if I need a little more reach, my old and beautiful Canon 135mm F2 lens. Therefore a tripod is a necessity, as this lens isn't stabilised! The other setup is my little old Samsung Nx2000, with a Samyang 12mm F2.0 MF lens! This is fab, as it's a tiny camera with an amazing quality apsc sensor, and with this lens, it's largely.... focus to infinity, set the aperture between F8 and F16, and let the exposure pick its own shutter speed. Raise the ISO if necessary,..... it's such fun shooting manually these days!Feedback
Light, light, light! For years, I took thousands of photos during the day. Early morning, and late evening photos will always be the keepers, if you have the luxury of choice of shooting times! Above all, have fun! If it stops being fun, you'll lose the inspiration to seize the moment! There's so much to capture... Go get it, and have a great time doing just that!
