Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at public Access #7 at Salisbury Beach MA. Salisbury borders New Hampshire and is as far north east as you can get in the state of Massachusetts. The entrance is right across the street from my house to where I can see the water from my second floor bedroom. Due to my location I have access to the horizon both east and west so my profile is full of sunrises and sunsets!

Time

The photo was taken within 10 minutes of sunrise. There was a front passing west to east at low altitude with heavy dark clouds. This resulted in what I'm guessing was a 4-5 degree slice of clear sky between the horizon line and the cloud bank. So....fairly dark ocean, sky and the sun acting as a horizontal spot light pointing west. I noticed it when I got up and literally grabbed the camera and ran to the beach. Between 6:13 and 6:16 I took 32 shots most east facing the sunrise.....then I turned south noticed what you see here and then took some on the street facing south....then the sun was gone above the clouds.

Lighting

This was a big natural lighting experience for me....lots of high contrast and colors. The sun was not there for long and the clouds were really dark. You can see the thinness of the horizon in the mid left (southeast in the shot)and the the lighting of the slats of the snow fencing and the sea grass behind is amazing.....didn't see any of that when I took the shot. I was really focused on how the front of the houses were being lit by the sun. I'm reminded now to look 360 when shooting sunrises/sunsets.....there are lighting opportunities everywhere.

Equipment

Hand held.....Canon 70D/Tamron 10-24MM F3.5/F4.5 @24MM....1/250/F4.5/ISO250.....believe the Tamron was the first non Kit lens I bought. I have since upgraded....My nephew now has it and it is his favorite now as it was when I had it.

Inspiration

I am lucky to live where I do......I'm constantly offered opportunities to capture early/late in the day. This day was one of the best in memory. Also have been inspired by Neal Parent of Maine (have a couple of framed prints in my house). His use of available light and shadow impressed me even before I started taking a lot of pictures myself.

Editing

Yes....used most of the primary sliders in light room. As usual....probably a little excessive on the clarity slider The sun was only there for a few minutes so I wasn't changing camera settings....just pointing and shooting before it was gone above the clouds. AS SHOT VERSION OF THIS NOW POSTED AS BEACH645 151017

In my camera bag

This was taken a couple of years ago.....right now I have a 6D, Canon EF16-35L (on the camera 90% of the time), a Tamron 28-300 F3.5, F5.3 PZF Di, a canon EF100 F2.8 macro and 3F/6F Breakthrough Photo ND filters....Always have my Mannfroto tripod/Agratech ultimate ball head in the car.

Feedback

Head on a swivel during the golden hour.....Set your ISO.
