Location
This photo was taken at Big Bear Creek Park in Grapevine, Texas. It was my first time to do a baby announcement photoshoot and I thought it would be a perfect location for fall.Time
It was taken at 4:51pm on October 03, 2015. This capture was one of my all time favorites with the gold lighting and bokeh surrounding their hands.Lighting
I recall setting up for this shot originally with the couple standing off to the side because I thought the green from the trees would compliment the blue dress. Yet when I turned my head I saw the orange and gold light of the sunset peeking through the clearing in the trees, I immediately shifted them over, crouched down and took this photo. I did not use any flash and was ecstatic with the result.Equipment
I used my Canon EOS 70D with a Canon 35mm f/4-5.6 lens. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
The mother-to-be requested a photo she found similar to this idea but with a darker background. I am one who will always encourage a client to look for ideas of photos but I explain that the photos I intend to capture will be a spin off from that idea. The lighting through the trees was happenstance since I had requested we move to this portion of the park towards the end. I love utilizing natural framing when I see it and I just so happened to have turned just at the right time when I moved them to this spot.Editing
For this photo I utilized Lightroom, which is the program I use for all of my work now. I added a small amount of vignette and warmth to the image, slightly lowered the highlights and added a few points of clarity to make the detail and color of their hands and shoes punch a bit more.In my camera bag
Since this shoot my inventory has developed quite a bit. I still use my Canon 70D as my primary camera, but now I use my Canon 50mm f/1.8 and Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens as my go to lenses. I also keep a Speedlite 580EX flash and RPQ studio diffuser in my bag at all times along with a fully charged back-up battery and extra memory cards. The Canon 70D has quickly become my favorite camera to use not only for my photography, but also for video. I have confidence more than ever with this equipment and think I will be keeping it for quite a while.Feedback
There is a quote which I love by Elliott Erwitt. He said, "taking pictures is not about thinking, but rather it's about discovery." This shot was the last angle I captured out of five. I took that many because each time I would look up, there was another one I wanted to try. As a photographer, even though you may be attempting to capture an idea your client requests or one you have in mind, you should always keep your eyes open for alternatives.
