Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in upstate New York in the Catakill Mountain region.

Time

This was taken around 9pm.

Lighting

The effect was created by burning wool. I used a whisk attached to a rope, stuffed with fine wool. As the whisk was swung around it would release small pieces of wool creating light trails.

Equipment

I used a Canon 60D with kit 18-55mm lens on an Oben tripod.

Inspiration

I was listening to a podcast that was talking about different items used to make like trails and figured why not give it a try.

Editing

I did a little bit of cropping and increased clarity for more effects in the light trails.

In my camera bag

My bag consists of a Tamron 70-300mm, Canon 50mm prime, and my kit lens. Other than that I always have a spare battery, extra memory cards, and a cleaning kit at all times. You never know when your going to need your cleaning kit or when a special moment happens and you run out of space on a card. You never want to miss out on an opportunity.

Feedback

My advice would be to try different exposures. A difference of 2 seconds could make a big deal when trying to achieve a certain effect. You can also use different sources of light such as glow sticks or flash lights. Try experimenting with two different color glow sticks spinning them in opposite directions. The effects are pretty cool.
