Location
This photo have been taken from my than home in Belgrade, Serbia.Time
Taken at late Summer sunset time, golden hour.Lighting
Lighting was completely natural, Sun provided not only point of interest but an opportunity for silhouette.Equipment
Film camera Minolta XG9 with Russian 85mm Jupiter lens at f2.0, a tripod.Inspiration
This is view from my than room. I noticed a beautiful sunset and experimented with Sun intentionally out of focus. From previous sunset filming from the same location I knew that if in focus, even with my longest lens, Sun will appear small. I wanted it larger and from physics I knew it will look so if out of focus. Liking the geometry in my images I experimented with various additional subjects in focus to balance the image, from a very thin curtain (you can see that purely geometric shot among my other shots) to my sister's silhouette as in this photo.Editing
Film have been scanned and Photoshop used to crop&correct film scratches and scanning blemishes. In my camera bag
Currently Nikon D600 and Nikon prime lenses 20mm f2.8 and 85mm f1.8. Polarizing filter&sundry batteries/cleaning/...Feedback
Think out of the box. The main source of success with this image and related set was in choice to do something not as "it is supposed to be done" - take sunset picture out of focus. With a clear idea why are you doing so. Experiment. On specific for this type of an image: longer lens at wider aperture will assist in getting this type of image. In focus part was set as close to the camera as possible, maximizing the effect. Important in this day and age when many sensor formats are available: use lens longer than 50mm no matter the "equivalent focal distance" to get most of such setup, physical properties (depth of field, compression of the field,...) needed for this image stay with the real focal length, no matter the sensor size.
