Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on one of my favorite hikes in Summit County, Colorado.

Time

This was probably one of the coolest morning sunrises I've ever caught. My friend and I had planned to wake up at 6 to catch the sunrise, and we almost didn't go because we didn't think it would be a good one. We were wrong for sure and I'm so glad we went anyways! We walked back home with low batteries on our cameras, super cold fingers, and a giant grin on our faces.

Lighting

To be honest, there wasn't any pre planned ideas I had for lighting. I kind of just winged it and hoped that the light provided by the sunrise was enough to make it a decently lit photo!

Equipment

I used a Nikon d7100 with a 28-80mm 1:3.3-5.6 G lens. No tripod, no flash

Inspiration

Really the only thing that inspired me to take this photo was the fact that I absolutely love catching the sunrise. Mostly because I'm not a morning person, so I feel a small victory whenever I wake up to catch one.

Editing

I have further developed my post-processing skills since this photo was taken, but at the time, I only did minor color adjustments in Lightroom 6 and then brought it over to my phone to do some further touchups on this handy app I have called Snapseed.

In my camera bag

Of course I always have my Nikon d7100 which is a really good camera for my purposes. I also tend to bring my Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens. Easily my favorite lens, I can always rely on it to focus on my subject and give me the occasional bokeh. If I am planning to shoot the landscape that day, I tend to bring my 28-80mm lens to capture the vastness of the Rocky Mountains (where I live). And on top of that, if my bag is not to heavy already, I will bring a GoPro Hero 4 to capture some ultra wide angle videos and photos of my adventures. My other equipment that I use less often, but still occasionally is my Neewer TT560 Flash Speedlite (flash) and Vanguard tripod.

Feedback

Just go with it. I am sucky at choosing the right lens for the right occasion, but if I bring the wrong one, I just find another way to capture the space around me. My favorite thing to photograph is my dogs and I usually try to pose them, but they like to do their own thing, so if you are trying to photograph a dog, let them be a dog and you'll probably be happier with the results you get. This photo was my favorite of the photoshoot and it was totally candid. My friend always says that Uncle (dog pictured) really appreciates where he lives and I feel that this photo represents that.
