Location
I took this photo at my parents house. They live on the countryside in a house with a big garden where the dogs can play in the garden. It is a perfect location for a photo shoot because the dogs feel really comfortable and don't get stressed our distracted.Time
I took this photo at the end of a sunny day. I love to photograph at the end the day because the light is a lot softer and warmer than at the middle of the day. Not only is it more flattering, it also gives the photo a lot of atmosphere. I took this photo around 7 pm on August 19, 2015.Lighting
I took this photo with natural light and a reflector. The sun was behind Boetie (the dog) and the reflector was pointed at the right side of his face.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 550D and a 50mm lens. Beside that I used a white reflector.Inspiration
I just wanted to make some nice shots of my dog Boetie. He is such a sweet and beautiful dog and he is also really photo genetic. I love playing with him and capture his happy face on camera. I like photo's with a positive vibe and every time I make photo's of him the end result give me a smile on my face.Editing
I used Photoshop Elements to edit out his collar (it would have been easier if I took it off before but I forgot) and to make the photo black and white. In my camera bag
Nowadays I use a Canon 70D with mostly the Canon EF-S 18-135mm IS STM lens. I have been travelling a lot lately and this lens is good for not only photo's of landscapes and portraits but also for video's. However if I know I am only going to photograph portraits I will use my Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM lens because the quality of the portrait shots is so amazing with this lens. Beside those lenses I have the 50mm in my bag.Feedback
Have patience. Animals are not always as easy to direct as people and sometimes it takes 100 photo's just to have 1 good one. Your light can be really good but if the expression of the dog is not interesting the photo is not that eye catching. Try to capture the personality of the dog. It makes the photo more original. If I see a photo of my dog I want my dog to be recognizable and not like every other chocolate labrador that you find on google images. Make sure you photograph the dog in a place where it feels comfortable, a happy relaxed dog is a lot nicer to look at than a stressed our scared one. Shoot at the end of the day to get a soft and warm light.
