Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is of the Cape Otway Lighthouse in Victoria along the Great Ocean Road. It was a dark and gloomy day, perfect for photography.

Time

It was taken on a gloomy day with rain clouds promising a storm. Just perfect for photography.

Lighting

When the people came out of the lighthouse onto the landing and one of them had on a yellow rain jacket, I thought that was a perfect contrast to the colours of the lighthouse and sky. Also it showed the scale of the lighthouse compared to the people

Equipment

This photo was shot on my Canon EOS 1000D hand held.

Inspiration

The day, the brooding storm pending, the white lighthouse contrasting against that sky. With the people walking around the balustrade, it was the perfect opportunity to capture the image.

Editing

I used Lightroom to enhance the photo by adding a bit of saturation to the burst of yellow on the jacket, clarity to the photo and whitening the lighthouse slightly to contrast more with the sky.

In my camera bag

I always carry my tripod, different lenses and a ND filter for taking long exposures.

Feedback

If its a rainy day or there is a storm pending, instead of staying inside, sometimes that's the best time to get out and take photos. The sky is dark and contrasts perfectly with other scenery in landscapes and if it has been raining the colours deepen when wet, your photos will always take on a different look.
