This seemingly simple coastal photograph has a lot to look at after in-depth focus. The composition is curious with its alignments and low tide pools along the beach. And, looking closer at the horizon just below a setting sun, the distant land mass indicates the opposite shore can not be too far. But, then there's the thin grey (silver) rise at the water-horizon that seems to indicate a wave is on the way. This makes no sense if the opposite shore is truly not very distant. So what's causing this possible wave at dusk with a calm clear sky? Or, is it in fact a wave? Is it a seawall? Is it a jetty? Is it just discoloration of the water surface in the distance? Ultimately, the answers are not important. This photograph has enticed me to look with a critical eye, as it has graced my attention beyond being just a magnificent sunset. And, this is what makes photography such an essential art, for it teaches us to look at the world around us, thereby cultivating a greater understanding, even if only incremental.
However, I do really want to know why this tree is dead?
