Location
During a once-in-a-lifetime hiking trip in October of 2013, I visited a number of state and national parks in Utah and Nevada. This was taken at the Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada. In this and the other amazing parks, like Zion and Bryce Canyon, there is a picture available at every step of the way, and a few minutes later, those same scenes will be different as the light and shadows change so quickly.Time
This was taken in the heat of mid-day. During our 10 days of hiking, we had clear blue skies almost every day.Lighting
An hour later this would be a different image as light and shadows shift.Equipment

I was bombarded with potential images. This particular spot caught my eye because the natural geological formations reminded me of ancient human dwellings, and of course, the image was naturally framed.Editing
This a combination of 3 photos processed in Photomatix, which is what I had available at the time. I think I could improve on it today with other software, including Ps.In my camera bag
I'm rather accident prone and have been through more cameras and lenses than I care to recount. I'm now using a very beat-up Nikon D90 with a Sigma 18-250 zoom. I also carry an AF-S Micro Nikkor 105mm for macro shots and what little portraiture I might do. I occasionally use a Cokin graduated ND filter. I use a Milano carbon-fibre tripod.Feedback
Be prepared to take your time; walk slowly. Hike at different times of day. Bracket exposures in these high-contrast situations.
