This was taken at Embarcadero in SanDiego California over 10 years ago. It was during a photography vacation my friend Rich and I would visit local places of interest. That day was a perfect day for a sunset. I've never seen colors like this before while on photography excursion, nor have I seen since then. Considering I took this photo with an Olympus SP-500UZ camera, my first digital camera, it surprises me that this shot came out so well. To the left of this photo and out of view, was the sail ship "The Star of India". further down to the left was the ship used to film "Master and Commander" the Far Side of the World. My friend and I were so inspire by this shot. He also took one very similar to mine. We still speak of that sunset when we get together for photo trips. Rich said to me 2 years ago, "There will never be a sunset like that in our lifetime". I believe he's right.Time
This is one of my favorite images I've ever taken. The hues in colors were amazing, from golden orange to red orange, cobalt blue between the swirls of clouds. Sadly, I no longer have the exact time nor date when I took this particular photo. All I know it was either 2006 or '07 and I was just starting to switch from film to digital and loved the convenience of erasing the mistakes and trying again. Rich and I started shooting photos from 4pm till 8:30pm. The best shots were of course the sunset over San Diego HarborLighting
You'll have to excuse me, but I still consider myself an amateur. I can not give you technical terms to explain how I came about the shot. We waited until the sun actually set below the horizon, this allowed the clouds to shine those golden hues. I actually had the camera on Sunset setting and used no filter. The colors were still intense even though the sun had already set. My friend Rich has more experience in photography and he shot many images in raw for greater detail in post production. His photo came out better than mine so, if you like this image, there's a better one taken by my friend Rich.Equipment
I used an Olympus SP-500UZ, 6.0 megapixels, an old tripod I had for over a decade, can't remember the brand. The camera did have a 10x optical zoom which I may have used.Inspiration
The once in a lifetime colors. I was already in love with the surroundings, but the colors, I will never forget.Editing
I was learning to do my own processing. I spent time on this shot trying to get as much detail from the scene while keeping the same colors in the sky. I touched it up a couple of times since the original post processing. Sadly, the original was lost when my laptop crashed and i was never able to recover hundreds of photos from that afternoon. I had to used a copy from the original that I uploaded on Facebook. I then compared it to an 8' by 10" I had printed of this shot from the original. It matched and I was satisfied with the end product.In my camera bag
Back then, it was a Minolta 5000 DLSR along with the Olympus SP-500UZ, Filters, polarizer, lens cleaner towelettes and brush. Also a Telephoto lens for the Olympus. Now, I carry a Lumix DMC-GX1, with a 14mm - 42mm HD, a 45 - 175 HD and a telephoto lens 45 - 200 MEGA O.I.S. Lens cleaner, dust brush. A back up camera same model that my friend Rich gave to me. He prefers Nikon. A Manfrotto NG Tundra professional tripod, extra battery pack and card. On rare occasions, I may bring along the old Olympus when trips are out of the way. Otherwise, I keep it simple.Feedback
Patience, lots of it. If you can work the surroundings prior to the actual shoot; a sunset. Arrive early and get familiar with your surroundings. When you're shooting, there's not enough time to set up a shot, so pick the best locations where you'll stand to shoot the sunset. Once you start shooting travel back and forth from the best spots that you shot from. You'll lose light quickly and must be very observant what to use. If you never seen it before, start shooting and use your experience in what you want to capture. Good luck.
