Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Huntington Beach, Orange County, California. I love sunsets and I was just getting acquainted with my Digital camera. It was just an opportunity shot. It was there, so I shot it.

Time

It was late afternoon, with a fast approaching sunset. It was a planned stroll along the beach to shoot anything of interest.

Lighting

I noticed that water reflections on the sand were fantastic. Also, using the sun as your light source by adjusting angles, work well for your objects of interest.

Equipment

At the time I was using my an Olympus SP-500UZ Digital camera. It only took 6 Megapixels and only had more detail if you shot in raw mode. Believe it or not, that little camera shoots like an old fashion film camera. You must focus and take that single shot. It taught me patience. I did not use a tripod. I just knelt on the sand and looked for the proper angle.

Inspiration

I was a big fan of "Baywatch" back in the 1990's and this was just a reaction to it. Fulfilling an inner wish if I ever was in the area.

Editing

Yes, I cropped it a bit. Light enhancement on the golden color; that's it. The shot stands out on it's own.

In my camera bag

Back then, just my Olympus, back up batteries, extra digital card, filters and a telephoto lens. Now I use a Lumix GX1, a telephoto lens, and a monopod or a tripod. extra cards of course and back up battery packs.

Feedback

Walk the scene before you shoot earlier in the day. Try to picture in your mind what the sunset would look like to your areas of interest. Later, try to choose the angle that lights up or diffuse the natural light. I have other shots during that visit I never posted and lost them when my laptop crashed back in 2007. I have a couple that survived on Facebook.
