This photo was taken at London Bridge whilst I was helping my young son with his photography project for schoolTime
I took this image at 3am on a cold winters morning. I remember it well, because it was a clear and crisp sky.Lighting
I had been after a good shot that comes straight from the camera with no editing necessary, but I hadn't planned it for that night. I was concentrating more on showing my son how using long exposure could produce amazing fine art. Normally I would use my light meter to find the correct exposure but to be honest, I used guess work for this particular image......I had already spent a good couple of hours taking shots so I did have a rough ideaEquipment
I used a Nikon D7000 with a 28mm f/2.8 manual lens and my tripod.Inspiration
I see myself as a Portrait Photographer but do like to experiment when I get the time. My son was my biggest inspiration for this image, as soon as I showed him how long exposure worked he ended up taking amazing fine art images that night. I wanted an image that I could print and hang on the wall so that we could keep that amazing time in our memoriesEditing
I haven't post-processed anything for this image, it's straight from the camera. In my camera bag
Light meter is essential for me. I also carry the sigma 17-35mm f/2.8 and the sigma 70-200mm F/2.8. Two speed lights, small reflector and two lightweight tripods.I always carry two extra camera batteries for each camera and a fresh 16gb memory card, (I prefer smaller cards as I feel they don't slow the camera down at all when nearing full, and also I really don't have the time to download thousands of images, I try to limit myself to a hundred images depending on the job. I also work with black and white film so always have either my Nikon F100 35mm or my Bronica ETRS 120mm with meFeedback
Although I wasn't looking for anything in particular at the time, I think having the clear sky was a major plus side. I think for me when using long exposure, I try to find the correct exposure first by working out my EV and then gradually alter the times to see which image is more pleasing to my own eye. I love to experiment because who knows how the end product will turn out. Never be afraid to be daring!
