It was perfect , the sun had set beyond me and the lamp posts had come on. I needed to close the aperture to ƒ/22.0 to get the long exposure to smoke out the waves and get the starburst from the lamp posts.Equipment
I used my D5300 with the kit lens 18-140mm and a Manfrotto tripod with a remote shutter. I needed the tripod and the remote shutter because I was using a long shutter speed.Inspiration
Twilight is my favorite time of the day and I was trying to capture the mood with the color of the sky and sea, as well as trying to make the waves look like fog or smoke.Editing

I am a bit of a pack rat when it comes to photography and I carry it all with me all the time, like a boy scout I like being prepared for everything. I will say I tend to use my prime 35mm lens and my wide angle 10-24mm lens the most. I usually try to bring my remote shutter and a tripod as well as a microfiber cloth to clean the lenses. And I find my variable polarizing lens very useful.Feedback
I would say pay attention to the light. I would think that right after sunset is perfect, if it is too bright out you will have a hard time getting a long enough shutter speed. If it is too dark the colors will be off and the picture could get really noisy. You will need a tripod and remote shutter. This photo had a shutter speed of 20 seconds to get the waves to look like smoke and there is no way to get that effect without keeping the camera steady. The remote shutter also helps prevent blur. It goes without saying that having a beautiful scene to shoot is also essential. For that I would highly recommend the Outer Banks of North Carolina, there is no shortage of beautiful beach scenes.
