Location
This image was taken at the Leschenault Inlet in South Western AustraliaTime
The time was 6.15pm, we were travelling back from a photoshoot at Wagin and decided to buy fish & chips for tea, we had to wait 20-30 minutes for our order so we drove over to the inlet boat ramp to have a look (we live 10 minutes away). Before our eyes the sky just started to change to brilliant shades of orange, people were pulling up everywhere and getting their cameras out, fortunately I had mine ready so I just started shooting. There was also a dinghy coming back to the boat ramp from fishing/crabbing, what a great experience they must have had.Lighting
This was shot using the ambient light only, it was amazing so there was no need to add additional lighting.Equipment
I shot this image with a Canon MkIII, Canon F/4 L IS USM 24-105mm lense @ 24mm, 100 ISO hand held.Inspiration
It was just such a surreal scene, the colours & reflections on the water, the cloud formations created amazing patterns. This was the perfect "right place right time" and I would like to say well planned but if it wasn't for wanting fish & chips for tea after a long drive I would have missed it!Editing
I shoot Raw, so I did all the basic editing in Lightroom and enhanced the tones, clarity and vibrancy was done with the Lightroom Punch preset. In my camera bag
Typically my camera has the 24-105mm lense on most times as I find this a very versatile and excellent lense. I also carry a Canon 50mm 1.4mm, Canon F/2.8 L IS II USM 70-200mm and Tamron 10-22mm. I carry variable ND & polarising filters, a Speedlite 600EX-RT, plenty of cards, batteries and cloths. I also have the camera manual and various cheat sheets I have accumulated tucked away just in case I get stuck trying to take a particular shot.Feedback
I have shot hundreds of images of this estuary system over the years and I'm always amazed at how diverse the scenery appears with the different lighting conditions. Typically sunrise/sunset offer great opportunities, but also storm systems create a completely different scene (you just have to manage the cold & wet). The one thing I have learned from many others that has paid dividends numerous times is to always "take your camera", you just never know what you may see anytime of the day.
