Love how the wooden walkway just fades off into the distance. Nice foreground for the milky way. Welcome!

Behind The Lens

Location

Cape Hatteras National Seashore Frisco, NC

Time

2 A.M. EST

Lighting

It was pitch dark, no moon or lights. I couldn't even see the pier. Long exposure high ISO @ f/2.8.

Equipment

Nikon D7100 with Tokina 11-16 2.8 Pro lens. MeFoto Travel Tripod and wireless remote.

Inspiration

The journey to learn photography and grow my skill level.

Editing

Post processing in Lightroom only to change the temperature of the photo. I wanted the sky blue and that brought out the Milky Way.

In my camera bag

Remote, sturdy tripod, DSLR, and a wide angle lens.

Feedback

There is a lot of patience needed to do night photography. You must have a wide angle lens that is at minimum a f/2.8 aperture. You must pick a night with NO moon (called a new moon). You must find dark skies( there are apps for that). Even street lights will prevent you from capturing stars. Then practice and change your ISO and long exposure times for the best capture. This photo was taken with and ISO of 3200 for 25 seconds at f/2.8. For my lens, anything longer caused the stars to drag. The night I took this picture I fell in love with night photography. Since that time I travel only when there is a new moon and I find dark skies at my destination so I can continue my love of this hobby!
