Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken outside of my office, I have the privilege to work in Kananaskis, Alberta and the scenery is beautiful all around.

Time

I was getting off work from the night shift and it must have been around 7am when I took this picture. The sun was just starting to rise over the mountains.

Lighting

The great thing about the lighting in this picture is that only the tips of the mountains were getting sunlight and you can tell that the rest of the picture is still pretty dark. The sun rise fairly quick and I had jaunt a short amount of time to get my camera out of the car.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D7000 with a 18-105 lens. I was shooting at 18mm to be sure I had a wide view of the landscape.

Inspiration

The view inspired me to take this picture, every time I go to work I get the drive through the Rocky Mountains, some people will pay to travel to my location and I get to work here. The view is never the same, the sun never really rise or set the same way or at the same time and it opens up so many possibilities to photograph. I can see bears, elks, deers, coyotes, mooses, etc etc on my drive in or out. When the colour changes in the trees it is so lovely but sadely the leafs fall really fast and I don't get enough time to enjoy the scenery.

Editing

I used Snapseed app on the iPad, I adjusted the brightness so I could see the lower portion of the picture, I also adjusted the saturation to get the colour in the trees, the colours are so nice in the fall, I didn't want to miss it.

In my camera bag

I always carry my tripod, my D7000 with 18-105, 60mm macro, 16mm fisheye and 70-300 VR lenses. I have a speed light but also carry an LED light for when I need constant light on my subject. One of my favourite item is the remote, it is the best things to have for night pictures. I have a second kit with studio light and umbrellas, but I don't really use them and stay stay behind.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to shoot when it is cloudy, I find that it gives more dimension to the pictures. If the sky would have been clear on the day I would have lost the inspiration to take the shot. I would have probably ended up with a washed out sky and it would have taken away the focus on what I really wanted to achieve. Always be prepared, my camera is always near me and I make sure that the battery is charged. Set your alarm and get up earlier and look at what is available for you to shoot or even go out for a drive late a night out of your usual routine. I try to take a different route home when I get the chance and discover new place and find inspiration with different landscape.
