Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the shore of Kempenfelt Bay in my hometown of Barrie, Ontario, Canada. This was the first time I had shot a sunrise.

Time

I woke up early and headed down to the water to walk along the shore until I found the perfect location for the sunrise. This image was taken Tuesday September 22, 2015 at 7:19 am

Lighting

I wanted to catch the sun's reflection under the branch with the sun rising above. It required a few attempts playing with angles to get the right shot.

Equipment

I used a Nikon d3100 to capture this with the kit 18-55mm lens, after my main cameras battery had died.

Inspiration

I had seen the sunrise over the bay multiple times in the past but had never had my camera on me. It never failed to impress me so I decided it was time to take the camera down to capture the beauty.

Editing

The raw image required post processing. I wanted to retain as much of the original image as possible so I just changed the wb and saturation slightly to make the colour pop out more.

In my camera bag

My bag usually contains my Nikon d7100 with kit lens 18-140mm, sigma 105mm f/2.8 Marco lens, 35mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8, extra battery, and my Nikon d3100 body just incase

Feedback

Don't stick to one angle, play with the camera angle as much as possible. Take the time to go early and scout out a preferable location for your shot. Dress for the weather and in early morning don't be afraid to bring or wear an extra layer, you won't regret it. Last but not least don't be afraid to get dirty, getting down low on your belly and knees can produce some amazing angles you otherwise may have missed.
