Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on my second day at Canadian Forces Station Alert, in Nunavut, Canada; the north tip of Ellesmere Island.

Time

This photo was taken in April 2014 when the sun was already providing 24 hours of sunlight.

Lighting

While it was taken around noon, the sunlight changes very little throughout the day at that time of year to to it's latitude about 82 degrees north. The temperatures were around -20 degrees celcius, and the lighting and temperature made for a crystal clear day for taking photos.

Equipment

This was taken with a Sony A77 and a Sony 55-300 SAM lense. We were in a tracked vehicle (a BV-206) and the female sat down right beside us, so I had to simply lean across the driver and take the photo out the window.

Inspiration

This beautiful female wolf of the Alert pack came closer to the vehicle and lay down; it was simply too good of an opportunity to pass up.

Editing

Only simple processing was done to ensure the best possible image. I little sharpness was added to ensure that the ice crystals on her ear visible and I played with the light and dark to get the most realistic photo possible.

In my camera bag

I always travel with my Sony A77 as well as my 55-300 lens, my 18-70 lens, and my 50 SAM lens. No trip is complete without my tripod and filters, which include a few ND filters and a polarized one. I also have a note book for anything that needs to be written down.

Feedback

While I would love to espouse on the techniques I used in this case, it all came down to the right place at the right time. This pack and the location on the planet are rather unique and it led me to be able to take this amazing photo that I'll never forget.
