Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my living room at home. I started out doing family portraits to try and get some money back for my photography addiction.

Time

I think this image was taken some time in the morning. I have a North facing window at home in Canberra, that lets in plenty of natural light.

Lighting

The main thing about the lighting here is that it is soft window light, at a 45 degree angle. It is a very long skinny room, so the white back wall turns to a dark grey, making it perfect for portraits.

Equipment

Canon 50D with a 50mm 1.8 lens, overexposed by a stop or so.

Inspiration

I new that the location would create a great image with the soft light streaming in through the window, so it was just a matter of posing an interesting subject in front of it.

Editing

Yes, I used lightroom to run one of my favourite presets over it. The preset looks at adding some contrast and a vignette, as well as giving it a bit of a red tint.

In my camera bag

It really depends what sort of shoot I am planning for the day. I specialise in not specialising, so it could be a concept shoot, sport, landscape, wildlife or beauty, so my bag of goodies changes all the time. Mostly I will have my canon 5d mark 2 with a 50mm 1.4, 24-105 or 200mm 2.8. For sport/wildlife I wrestle a canon 400mm 2.8 monster.

Feedback

It is actually a really simple image to take. Find a room with a window on the one side only, or pull the curtains shut on any other windows, so that you can control the light coming in, ie so that the light only comes in from the one window. Then place your subject close to the window, and get in tight.
