Location
This photo was taken at my home in the backyard.Time
This photo was taken on September 15, 2015, at 9:15 in the morning.Lighting
This was early morning.Equipment
I used my Canon 5d Mark III with a 100mm canon macro lens. I also attached my macro light.Inspiration
The monarch butterflies were like a science project for my children this year. They watched them as caterpillars and then when they want into their chrysalis's. They watched the chrysalis change after about ten days and then the monarch butterfly emerged. We gave the caterpillar about two hours to let the wings expand and then we took him outside and he wasn't capable of flying yet so we had maybe another 45 minutes with him before he flew off. With her holding the butterfly was the final stage as they had watched it from the beginning to the end.Editing
I gave the final image a sepia tone and did a vignette along the edges. In my camera bag
I normally have my Canon 5d Mark III, 100mm canon macro lens, 65mm canon macro lens, canon 100-400mm and my 24-105mm canon lens.Feedback
That would be tricky, butterflies don't normally come up to people and allow you to hold it for a long period of time. If planning on something like this, it takes about 3 weeks, finding them (I planted a butterfly garden in my yard), watching them and then preparing for them to emerge.
