Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my studio in historic downtown New Bedford,MA.

Time

This was taken in the middle of the day. With my two girls, it takes us a long time to get out of the house. This was right after lunch.

Lighting

I just used my regular studio lighting (Alien Bee 400 with an 86" PLM)

Equipment

I shot this with my Nikon D610, my "nifty 50" and my Alien Bee 400 with an 86" PLM

Inspiration

These are my two daughters. They always pretend to be photographers like their dad and I. So I thought it would be great to set them up with a little "studio of their own". My little one never goes anywhere without her "puppy" and was happy to pose for her sister. I loved the innocence of this picture.

Editing

I adjusted/upped the exposure in Adobe Bridge and cropped in. I also removed scuff marks from the floor. My oldest daughter had been tap dancing on there the week before and it was pretty marked up. I hadn't yet repainted it, so I had to do all that in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I always have my Sigma Art 35 1.4 mm, my Nikkor 85 1.4 mm, and my Nikkor 28-70 2.8 mm with me. I have several other lenses, but these are my goto ones, so as long as they're with me, I know I'll capture the moments I want. I also keep extra batteries and extra SD cards, in my bag, just in case. I keep a stack of business cards with me as well.

Feedback

I specialize in newborn and child photography. The best way to capture these moments is to not pose children - but just let them play! I set up the background put down the suitcase and told them they could use it to sit and then handed my daughter the old Brownie camera. Then I just let them pretend and I snapped away. I find being a spectator rather than a director let's me capture the pure innocence of childhood.
