This ceremonial burning of a mock Viking Longship in 2012 was to commemorate 1000 years since the epic battle between Danish forces (commanded by a 17 year old Canute, later to rule England as King Canute) and King Malcolm II of Scotland's troops.
The Scots won a bloody battle but a treaty was signed to stop the wars from that day.

The town name "Cruden Bay" is thought to have been formed from the term "Croju Dane" (blood of Danes) as the river was said to have ran red with the blood of Canute's Viking troops.
