Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my yard right next to the bird feeder but for a more natural shot I waited until the feeder was out of sight. My wish is to get a hummingbird feeding on a pretty flower ;-) I'm a self taught photographer and I still need a lot of practice with birds, living out in the country helps.

Time

I've taken many pictures of hummingbirds on various occasions so I don't remember the specific of this one but in the middle of one hot summer day as I wanted to be as close as I could to the birds, I set the tripod & camera 10 feet away with a lawn chair and a camo blanket over the equipment and myself.... sweat was dripping down big time but I was determined to stay there until I got the shot I wanted.... this might have been that day.....

Lighting

no flash... no reflectors....Just used the mid-day summer sunshine for this photo....

Equipment

This was shot with the canon 6D and the canon 400mm f5.6 mounted on a sturdy Ravelli tripod and a smooth Jobu design Gimbal head.

Inspiration

I started taking pictures of birds when I got my 400mm lens last year.... That lens helped me open my eyes to a world I hadn't paid any attention before, I realized I had never really looked at birds, I realized how pretty they were, I discovered colors I didn't think they had, I have learnt so much about them.... their names, habits, flying patterns, mating dances, characters.....Taking bird pictures has become a passion.

Editing

I shoot RAW and use lightroom6 for processing my images. In this picture I only did the basic touches with whites, blacks, highlights, shadows and clarity.

In my camera bag

With experience my bag got so big that I'm unable to carry it all with me and when comes time to pick it's always difficult (unless I know what I'm going to shoot for sure....) If it's gonna be a bird day then I don't hesitate and take my canon 7D mark II and my canon 300mm f2.8 lens, this is a great combination (unfortunately a bit pricey) but I can't get better result with the other lenses I own.

Feedback

For bird pictures you need a great deal of patience and sometimes I don't have enough of it.... so I put a bird feeder close by, or I find a tree that birds like (they love the mulberry tree towards the end spring when the berries are abondant and ripe) I set my equipment on a steady tripod, pick a nice sunny day, a good spot for better light and wait.
