Location
This photo was made in Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the country house of Rodrigo Hilbert during the shootings of his cooking TV show.Time
This was early morning. We used to wake up 5am and make a one hour travel to the house to prepare all the gear. Some times we need to waiting something to start shooting. During this rest time, some people reed, some people chat and I was making some photographs.Lighting
In the winter at the countryside, the light is beautiful. It is like every time at the day we have light like early morning. Back light can be one of the most beautiful lights in the world.Equipment
I used a nikon D800e with a 85mm Zeiss lens handheld.Inspiration
I was doing something and pass trough Barbara who was reading at the door. The way the sun os shining on her was amazingly beautiful, and the book bounced some light on her face. I took my camera to make the photo.Editing
The original is a raw file, so it is in color, although I set my camera to shoot in BW so I am not distracted by colours. I used lightroom and usually have some blacks and whites in the foto, not using contrast to do this. I work blacks and whites separately, so I do not lose all the beautiful greys of the image. In my camera bag
Now a days I really like small gear but it is hard to let go the full frame format. I have a Sony a7R2 (thinking in change to Nikon Z7). My main lenses are a Zeiss Contax G 90mm f2.8 that is an compact, sharp and amazing lens and the 55mm f1.8 Zeiss for Sony. Some times a take with me a 35mm f2 zeiss for leica and a 15mm f4.5 Voitglander for Leica with adapters.Feedback
I think that being available for the situations that arise is the most important thing for a photographer, even if he has control of the lights and flashes in a studio. This magnifies when you're shooting on the street or in a more documentary way. The weather in Teresópolis in winter changes a lot. I was happier photographing what I found than waiting for a certain light to happen. Even so, I believe that backlit situations deserve attention for the balance of light from the background to the dark of a face. Paying attention to photometry is essential. And if there can be something on stage that will light up the model's eyes, as in this case the book has, this can give a special charm and elegance to the photo. Most importantly, do not unlock the model and leave her at ease.
