Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven CT

Time

I've always wanted to shoot at Lighthouse Point so one winter day my son and I ventured out. What a mistake, the wind off the water cut to the bone. We lasted 10 minutes. So naturally I waited for the weather to break and one Spring afternoon we ventured back. This is one of dozens of great shots. This was shot just before sunset facing Long Island.

Lighting

My objective was to evoke a peace that requires no explanation, simply a visual understanding of what I was feeling at that moment.

Equipment

Canon EOS 70D, f/14 ISO 400 1/500 35-105mm, MEfoto tripod No ND filter, no artificial light One thing, I used a Canon RC1 remote control that I've had for close to 30 years and still with the original battery.

Inspiration

I've always been a portrait and event photographer but am fascinated with nature and it's never easy for me to get out and shoot being a single dad so whenever I have the opportunity, I embrace it fully

Editing

I use LR to add a little color, cropping and to add some contrast to enhance the dramatic effect of the sunset

In my camera bag

I carry 2 EOS 70D cameras, a Canon 600EX speedlite, transmitter, 700-300mm lens, 18-70mm, several filters, 2 extra sets of batteries for the cameras and speedlites, and a belt camera mount

Feedback

Scout your area, be patient. Practice, shoot, come back and shoot again. Invest in a good quality ND filter, I use one now and the results speak volumes.
