Behind The Lens

Location

On many occasions I photographed models artlessly, without prior planning or preparations. We travelled somewhere or stayed in place. Rejecting conventions and established rules of this work we simply enjoyed our freedom. For models those were spontaneous moments, when they did not have to give in to any rigours–zero deadlines, make up or pose. Pizza, Coke, cigarettes? Why not?! For me those where genuine moments of photographic freedom. The unfeigned joy of taking photographs! Interesting and unhampered conversations about life, music, books we have read or favourite films. No arrangements, fake gestures, making faces, awaiting “the right kind of light” or checking the exposure. Unprompted hand-shooting. On Saturday afternoon I left town with Agnes. The weather was beautiful and sunny and it was supposed to be just one of those days. We agreed only that we want to have fun. A month earlier a friend of mine contacted me with a man running an agritourism farm. A god-forsaken place without reception or Internet access. Woods, ponds, freely strolling horses and… an old bus from the ’70. In the middle of the forest! In such scenery our session, later called LAZY SUMMER, came to life. Joy, loads of good mood, sweet laziness and complete freedom. It must have come out in pictures.

Time

The beginning of August, before sunset.

Lighting

It's very important to keep the balance between the natural light and an artificial lighting. So I used a reporter Canon flash mounted outside the camera and the radio trigger. It was necessary to highlight the interior of the bus and illuminate the darker places.

Equipment

Canon 6D, Manfrotto tripod, Canon 430 EX, Canon EF 24-85 mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

Inspiration

My model – girl friend and the place I found.

Editing

Just Adobe Camera Raw and simple correction in Photoshop (curves, tones).

In my camera bag

Canon 5D Mark III, Sigma 50mm/f1.4, Sigma Art 24-105mm/f4, Canon EF 100mm/f2.8 macro, Canon 70-200/f.2.8 II Rangefinder Contax G2 and the Zeiss 35 mm/f2.0 and 45 mm/f2.0 Large format 4x5, Graflex Speed Graphic
