Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at an abandoned cottage

Time

The time was early afternoon

Lighting

I am a big fan of natural light and over the years I have learned to use it to my advantage and as is shown in this photo so all natural and with no reflectors or any other equipment, besides my camera

Equipment

The Nikon D800 and Nikon 70-200 f2.8gvr lens were the only equipment used

Inspiration

I enjoy photographing the human body and with female models, I enjoy capturing the female sensuality and Gemma gave me exactly what I was after. As to what inspired me, it really is hard to say because each shoot is different from the previous one and each location gives me something different and again, from the previous location and even though I get there with ideas in my head, it's not until I see the model against the background that I know what to do. In this case, the background allowed me to take high key photos which I believe compliment Gemma's complexion

Editing

The background had a lot of smudges on it which were cleaned up and Gemma's eyes were highlighted a little bit more and lips were slightly darkened and I did this for I wanted her face and expression for I wanted her face to be the centre of attention and not her body. The image was then converted to black and white

In my camera bag

I use D800 cameras and with a range of lens covering focal 16>600mm, 600mm being used for wildlife. On a shoot, I usually carry two cameras, Nikkor 105mm f2.8g, tele lens (70-200mm) and 2 wide angle lens covering 16-70mm, two speed lights, reflector and diffuser and of course, a tripod is always a must

Feedback

The aim for me is to be different and stand out when in a crowd and being made of photographers and it is when we are different that we get ahead. Photography is how we, the artists see the world and would like to think that when people look at my images, they then have a fairly idea on how I, as an artist go about portraying both myself and my art and yes, all my images are portraits of me and my art! Now, for the photo, the internet is full of boobs and every other part of the human body and I could have shared a picture of Gemma's boobs but why have people looking at boobs when they can be looking at the face instead and it is why I chose to show a picture where Gemma's face is the centre of attention and at the same time, a picture speaks louder when people stop and think about it My advice to people is, find out who you are and what you enjoy doing then through your photography, show the world. Play with natural light, take risks and have fun while doing so. This photo works well because Gemma's complexion and a model with darker skin possibly would not look as good so assess the area you are using and take photos that compliment the model. As for photographing models, have a look at their portfolio and what they are good at. Talk to them in advance and make sure they can and are happy to work with your ideas and if you are dealing with in experienced models, then talk to them more, guide them, give them a chance to get to know you. And most of all, enjoy the journey!
