A five-story building traces its origin back to 1852. built as a health resort near the Illinois River's across from Starved Rock State Park. the building sits on the former site of the Grand Village of the Kaskaskia, once the largest encampment of Native Americans in the continental United States. Believed to have been the home of 10,000 men, women and children, the Indian settlement was the first contact of French explorers Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette during their historic 1673 expedition.
