Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph a couple of years, maybe 3 yrs ago at the QuickChek Balloon Festival that took place in July. The place was Readington, in New Jersey. I had just started to play with the manual mode on my Nikon, so it would be the ideal opportunity to take some shots outdoors in natural daylight.

Time

This photograph has been one of my favorites since day 1. This was a hot summer afternoon in July, pretty much the peak of the season in NJ. The launch of these balloons was delayed by a couple of hours, so if I remember correctly, should be somewhere around 5 pm.

Lighting

The lighting was perfect, au naturel! There was no way one could have missed this shot and view. The placement of the sun in the West and the balloons rising on the East, made it easy to take a decent shot.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D5200 with a Nikkor 55-300 mm zoom lens. No tripod, no flash.

Inspiration

Just the view itself! The colors, the lighting, the sky was inspiring enough to capture the moment.

Editing

A little bit, mostly adjusted some highlights and shadows to enhance the colors. Maybe a little bit of contrast. Other than that, the picture is pretty much as it was shot.

In my camera bag

In my camera bag, besides my D5200, the 55-300 mm lens (by far, my favorite. Not a fan of the 18-55 mm). Other than that, 85 mm macro and 35 mm portrait lens. And sometimes the 50 mm, a few filters and a spare battery and charger. And then I always have my Samsung phone, currently the S8.

Feedback

Keep an eye out for the light. Some of the shots come out best, in natural light; be aware of your surroundings. Sometimes while taking a photograph, you already know how you want to look like post-processing - colored or B&W. Be a little prepared when going outdoors, it can come in really handy. You never know what you might come across that gets your attention, and could be the 'Kodak" moment!
