Behind The Lens
Location
While standing at the boat ramp entrance to our local marina of Brome Lake, Quebec.Time
The image was taken Aug 17th 2013 at 6:32am. The sun had been up for about an hour over the horizon to my right. It has been a cool night and had the makings of going to be a very warm day, hence the mist/fog on the surface of the lake. No wind overnight or in the early part of the morning, so it made for a perfect mirrored surface within the marina. You can see further out into the lake the water is moving.Lighting
All natural early morning sunlight coming from the right.Equipment
Using my Nikon D90 using an 18-70mm Nikon lens mounted on a Manfrotto tripod. The lens focal length at 31mm, f/stop at f16 and shutter speed 1/40th of a second. ISO at 200. No filters on the lens.Inspiration
It was a perfect setting at that time of the morning and the surface was a perfect mirror.Editing
All processing done in Adobe Lightroom (do not remember what version of Lightroom used back in 2013). The image was cropped along the bottom and in from the right side. Used my standard workflow of lowering the highlights, opening the shadows, set the white and black points. Increase the clarity just a bit. Saved the color image then used Lightroom's black and white conversion with slight adjustments to most of the color sliders. In my camera bag
Nikon D90 with the MD-80 battery holder (mainly used to provide better feel/grip for the camera in my hand), 18-70mm Nikon lens, 55-200mm Nikon lens, collection of filers (B&W polarizing, B&W red filter, package of graduated neutral density filters that can be mounted on the Cokin system, wonderful old Metz 45CT-1 flash activates using a remote sensor. Aputure intervalometer, Manfrotto 055BK tripod with a Manfrotto 486 ball head. Large plastic bag to protect the camera from the elements and enable changing lenses in the wind. Spare charged batteries, Swiss Army knife with lots of tools, compass. Relatively small 5 by 7 note book to record useful notes about locations, thoughts on images to try at other potential times of day, etc Keep it simple!!!Feedback
Mount your camera on the tripod and leave it there. This way you are more likely to have the tripod with you when you go out shooting. Get out there during the half hour before sunrise and for the 2 hours after the sun is up. This is the best time of day if you want calm water with the surface looks like a mirror. Have the sun to your right or left sides of you, and just slightly behind you. Watch the weather for very warm days and cool nights so the next morning is more likely to have mist/fog on the surface of the water.
