Behind The Lens

Location

Tefia in Fuerteventura, in the UNESCO dark skies area.

Time

Around 11pm

Lighting

I just light painted the Windmill for a couple of seconds with my smart phone torch. The rest is pure nature!

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D3100 with a Sigma 10-20mm on a Manfrotto compact tripod.

Inspiration

I was on a milky way hunt with one of the island's pro photographers. The first night was complete cloud cover with a massive electrical storm. We have up at 5am and headed out 2 nights later under amazingly clear skies and the milky way visible to the naked eye.

Editing

Just a little colour correction to take the kelvin lower, and to reduce the orange of the distant light pollution.

In my camera bag

I've upgraded now to the D5500, I always have the sigma 10-20mm, Tamron 16-300 walkabout and a Nikkor 35mm F1.8. Also a selection of Lee filters, manfrotto compact tripod and a remote release/ intervalometer.

Feedback

Dark skies, low light pollution, face south for the best part of the milky way, and find some interesting foreground to give some scale. And don't forget to look up and enjoy it inbetween shots!
