Location
This photo was taken in the bay area of Cairns, Australia. I was taking a walk on my last day in Cairns, completely saturated after a very invigorating conference of 5 days. It was a bright sunny Saturday, and the bay area was full of people enjoying the sun. The birds seemed to enjoy the sun in their way, snoozing, grooming or sauntering around.Time
This was broad daylight, around 11 a.m., and not really the best time for photography. In fact, the sun was a bit too hot for me, and I wore a broad brimmed hat to get some respite from the sun, as living in India, I do not particularly enjoy the sun so much. We have too much sunlight anyway!Lighting
The light was too bright, and there wasn't much I could do about that. ut the birds looked too appealing in their antics. So I underexposed the shot at -3 to get an optimum lighting condition.Equipment
I used a Nikon D90 camera with a 70-300 mm AF lens, handheld.Inspiration
I am a behavioural biologist, and I can't help observing animals, wherever I go. There were various species of birds on the shore, but the pelicans stole the show with their antics. The first time I saw one yawning, I was so amused that I didn't even think of taking a shot. I spent at least half an hour, watching them from a small bridge. They would be dozing with their beaks tucked under their wings, and then suddenly one would stretch elaborately, yawn in the most entertaining fashion, and then tuck its head back under a wing. This was too good a sight not to be photographed.Editing

As any field biologist would know, patience is the keyword to animal watching. And the more you watch, the better shots you get, because finally its all a matter of good sampling!
