There are two points along the California coast where the shoreline shifts direction. One is around Santa Barbara, where the coast turns a bit more northward, and a bit less westward, and another is it Point Arena, in Mendocino County, where the coastline makes a bee line, more-or-less straight north toward Oregon. This rocky point of land creates tricky currents that can be dangerous for sailing vessels, so a long while back (in 1870, to be precise), they built this lighthouse to warn coast-hugging ships of the hazards.
