Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the trailhead of the Kephart Prong trail on the North Carolina side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Time

It's one of my favorites images, and is relaxing every time I see it. This photo was taken on Friday, July 3, 2015 at 9:17 am.

Lighting

The early morning light coming through trees was pure luck, and really helped make this image what it is.

Equipment

This was created using a Nikon D7100 with an 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6 lens mounted on a tripod at f/22 for 10 seconds.

Inspiration

I love long-exposure shots with water, and this is one of my favorites. I wanted to create a scene you could get lost in. The early morning sun coming down through the trees, and the fog at the far point in the river was a pure luck.

Editing

My post-processing involved using Lightroom to remove way too dust spots, increasing the contrast a bit, and using my favorite dehaze tool, but not too much.

In my camera bag

For a long time, I used an Olympus E-10 with all the extra adaptors, then a Nikon D7100. I now have a Sony A7 III with a 24-105, 90mm macro, and a 200-600mm for wildlife. I also carry a flash and a multitude of filters.

Feedback

Enjoy playing with long exposure photos. Stop down as far as you can, and experiment. That's the only way this photo came out so well.
